Chain Reaction and Wednesday Night Riders Go Pink for a Purpose!
by Sasha Scheherzade
Once more the Chain Reaction, a group of vibrant bicyclists from Karachi, successfully organized its infamous Wednesday Night Ride courtesy the group founder and custodian Anila Weldon and Administrator CR Noman Nafees; with a cause to promote Pink Ribbon campaign thus mixing purpose with passion.
The bicyclists in Pink assembled on their allotted location at Total Gas Station of Phase 6 DHA vicinity and set out on the appointed time i.e., at 2030 hours. An approximate 100 plus bicyclists joined the Chain Reaction's bicycle campaign as they pedaled towards their desired destination near Ali Mosque between Kh-e-Muhafiz and Kh-e-Rahat; thus covering a circuit of 24kms at medium pace.
About the Pink Ribbon - The pink ribbon culture started in 1997, internationally, to send out the principal message that breast cancer should not be hushed up and has ever since become a vitally important cause, and that supporting it indicates good will towards women. The Pink Ribbon brand encourages people to buy and display pink color in the name of increased awareness and improvement in women’s lives and which aptly explains the Chain Reaction's night riders sporting Pink color as they passionately pedaled for the purpose.
A short yet insightful speech was delivered by Dr Asima Faisal, HOD Health and Hospital Management Program and Assistant Professor at IoBM; stressing on early detection of this hazardous disease thereby encouraging women to self examine themselves in order to prevent falling into the cancer trap and curbing the disease at the initial stage-1. This way increasing their chances of a cancer-free life for at least 20 years. By self examination once a month, chemotherapies could also be avoided, which is opted as the last resort when the disease reaches stage-3 and stage-4, after which there is less or no hope for the cancer patient.
Special mention goes to Wednesday Nite Riders, a no-strings-attached bicycling group comprising of over 300 enthusiasts on Facebook, led by Syed Rayhan Ahmad who ride every Wednesday, for joining the Chain Reaction's Pink Ribbon event.
A pizza party was arranged for the weary yet very lively Wednesday Nite Rider's and Chain Reaction's two-wheelers, in the end as a thank-you gesture.
